This year has brought many transitions to our home, some good, some not so much. Unexpected career changes for some family members have meant stepping back and re-assessing our priorities, but we're blessed and looking forward to new challenges.

Also, we added this little guy to the household. He is a sweet little beagle mix, adopted from a nice family who took in an expectant mommy dog, who subsequently gave birth to ten puppies, none of which looked alike!

If he grows into those big paws, he will be a pretty large dog!

Have Some Pithivier and Stay Awhile!

I love learning new foodie terms and my latest is "pithivier", which is defined as a round, enclosed pie, usually made with puff pastry. The filling is often a sweet frangipane, but those with savory fillings may also be called pithiviers. It is traditionally finished with a shine to the crust from either an egg wash or a thin layer of carmelized sugar at the end of cooking.

This Pear Pithivier was Robin Levinthal's offering on Top Chef's Restaurant Wars episode last week.

It looks delicious and the judges said it was the best dish Robin had made so far!

In honor of you know which holiday, I decided to browse Etsy for orange things today. And I was delighted to find some beautiful things in this often underrated color!

A Gift and A Vicarious Tour!

I could not resist buying this book for my sister's birthday. She is an avid knitter. And since our family is of Italian descent, it seemed like the perfect fit!

Of course, I also couldn't resist flipping carefully through it before mailing it off to my sister and I'm glad I did!

The book is called "Knitting in Tuscany" by Nicky Epstein. Along with some of her original patterns, the author presents tips and travel recommendations with beautiful photography and interesting commentary on the history of knitting in the region.

A glass of wine is always a welcome break!

I adore this beautiful knitted, wool version of Pinocchio! Author Carlo Collodi was born in Florence.

Siena is a beautiful, medieval city in Tuscany.

This is a knit wreath based on a terra cotta coat of arms for the Wool Guild. "On your wall, it declares your affiliation with the International Order of Knitters."

I found this book beautiful and inspirational. I couldn't begin to accomplish most of these projects, but I would love to wander around Tuscany and imagine doing them. I know my sister will love it!

Another Contender Gone and a Top Recipe!

And so we said good-bye last night to Top Chef contestant, Ron Duprat.
Ron is an executive chef from Haiti. He cooks with exotic flavors with a Haitian Creole influence.

I liked Ron's big, gruff personality and I was a little sad to see him go. But, the challenge of deconstructing a paella was too much for him, since according to head judge Tom Colicchio he didn't appear to know how to make one to begin with.

Below is one of his recipes. It sounds delicious and not too complicated for a home cook. I think I may try it this weekend in honor of Chef Ron!

Pan Seared Salmon with Spinach and Cannelloni Bean Saute and Citrus Butter

* 8 ounces wild salmon, filleted into 4-ounce portions
* 4 ounces Chablis
* 2 ounces heavy cream
* 1 bay leaf
* 1 lemon, zested and juiced
* 4 ounces spinach, washed and cleaned
* 1 small can cannelloni beans
* 1 clove garlic
* 2 ounces unsalted butter
* Olive oil
* Salt and pepper

1. For citrus butter, reduce Chablis and heavy cream by half with bay leaf and lemon juice. Mount slowly with butter (whisk in cold butter). Strain and season with salt and pepper to taste.
2. In a saute pan, heat 2 ounces olive oil and add salmon seasoned with salt. Cook until golden brown. Remove from pan and let rest.
3, In another saute pan with oil, cook spinach, garlic, and cannelloni beans. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To Serve:
1. Using a ring mold, pack spinach-bean mixture onto center of plate. Remove mold.
2. Gently place salmon on top of spinach.
3. Spoon citrus butter sauce over salmon and plate.
4. Garnish with lemon zest and fresh herbs.

Enjoy!

I've just returned from another quick trip to the beach with some great girlfriends.

We only had one day of sunny weather, so not much time was spent on the beach. But, the rain made for some lovely rainbows at the end of the day!

And we saw beautiful sunsets from our balcony!

The best thing, of course, was the wonderful visit with dear friends!

Goodbye to a Favorite Author

I was sad to hear about the death today of one of my favorite authors, Dominick Dunne. Oddly enough, I had visited his website for the first time today and had left a post of encouragement on his message board, regarding his battle with cancer.

I very rarely leave any sort of message as a fan, but I had just finished reading his book, " The Way We Lived Then" which is a sort of pictorial memoir about his life and the many famous people that he met along the way.

Mr. Dunne led a fascinating life among the Hollywood elite for many years before events in his life brought him to a serious crossroads and a period of self-examination. From there, at age 50, he began to write and embarked on a second career as an author and journalist, often covering high-profile murder cases, such as the O. J. Simpson trial.

He wrote several best-selling novels and was a columnist for Vanity Fair. I enjoyed watching him host the show, "Pride, Privelege and Justice" on TruTV.

Dominick Dunne was 83.

Mise En Place (Or Be Prepared)

I confess, I'm a foodie! I love to watch cooking shows of all types. Top Chef is my favorite reality show and the new season has just started. I always learn something when I watch this show. I am seriously thinking of learning French just so I can understand some of the often used culinary terms.

This week's favorite French term is "mise en place", which means "everything in its place." It is used in professional kitchens to refer to ingredients and components set up and prepared in advance of the actual cooking of the dish. Ingredients are measured, washed, chopped and placed in individual bowls. Utensils and equipment are also made ready for use. The purpose is to cut out wasted time when the chef is ready to cook the dish.

The mise en place competition on Top Chef is always fun to watch. The contestants are divided into teams and must tackle each task in a relay race, tasks such as chopping veggies, shucking oysters, beating egg whites, etc.

It's like watching a sporting event, but with food! What could be more fun than that? For a foodie like me, not much!

I attended a lovely wedding this past weekend. In place of the traditional Bridal March, the bride's entrance was accompanied by the playing of "Over The Rainbow." It was beautiful and it made me nostalgic for one of my favorite movies of all time. I found some wonderful things on Etsy while searching for "The Wizard of Oz"!

I love this limited edition art print by Robert David Bretz! It can be found in the Etsy shop, PaintAllNightStudios.

This primitive hand-painted sign from SawdustNStitches takes you back to a simpler time, and of course, to a place that is "over the rainbow"!

I always loved Glinda, The Good Witch, and imagined her as my very own godmother! This cross stitch pattern is available from Glenniz on Etsy.

These finger puppet characters from Weeknit are so cute, and would provide lots of storytelling fun!

I think it's time to schedule a family movie night and watch this wonderful classic again!

The vivid colors of Fall!

Each season, Pantone surveys the designers of New York Fashion Week to identify the 10 most directional colors. These are the colors in the Pantone Fashion Color Report for Fall, 2009. I love deep, vivid hues and the diverse palette shown here. American Beauty is gorgeous, saturated and lively! I adore the rich, dark shade of blue that is Majolica Blue. For neutrals, I am most drawn to Iron and Honey Yellow. This is a really beautiful palette, although a little light on the greens for my taste.

I am looking forward to seeing how these colors will show up in both fashion and home decor this fall. It looks to be a colorful season ahead!

Filling a First Apartment with Love and Style!

I've been spending a lot of time helping my daughter furnish her first apartment. She has her own ideas and tastes, not necessarily what I would choose, but some of her style is growing on me. We have been really doing some bargain-hunting to make her place look great on a college student's budget!

We've made great discoveries in some of the local re-sale shops, like these candlesticks. Very ornate and they are in like-new condition!

These mirrors are the perfect size to hang together on one wall in the bedroom. They are from a re-sale shop too! The mirror came off one of them, but she was able to glue it back on.

This gorgeous lamp was on sale at Hancock's! I think we paid about $35 for it.

And finally from another re-sale shop, these cool wall plaques with a beautiful aged relief pattern and fleur de lis!

All told, I was out less than $70 that day for these finds and I think they will make a great statement of her style. Now, if I can get finished with the throw pillows, pillow shams and curtains she has requested, she will be all set! I'll post photos of the finished room soon.

Atlanta in Five Days or Less!

I've just returned from a quick trip to Atlanta to visit family. We had so much fun, just shopping, seeing the sites and eating great food!
I visited IKEA for the first time. This is a great store for people starting out in their first home! They have virtually everything you need and lots of fun fabric choices!
After IKEA, we shopped and had dinner at Atlantic Station, a fairly new development in Atlanta with a mix of mid-range and upscale housing along with plenty of varied shopping and dining choices.
We visited "Z Gallery" and "West Elm" among some other shops!

After a few days of endless shopping, we decided to get away from the hustle and bustle, so we drove up to Blue Ridge, GA and took the scenic Blue Ridge Railway ride. Located in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the railway starts off in a quaint little town full of antique shops and meanders along the Toccoa River.

The weather was unseasonably cool for Georgia in July, and the train ride was a relaxing break from the busy pace we'd been keeping for most of the trip.

It's so invigorating to just get away for a few days! We had a great time and a fun visit with family. Must do it again soon!

Furnishing the Multi-Purpose Room

I've been considering the best way to use an empty bedroom in my house. I would like to make it a multi-use room to serve as guest accomodations as well as a place to watch movies and just relax. I considered a futon for this room, but I think I will go a more traditional route with a daybed. I think a daybed is a little more comfortable to sleep on and I really like the look of one, especially when filled with a big variety of pillows!
We owned a daybed many years ago, a very basic design. I was surprised at how many style options there are to choose from in daybeds.

For a really unique look, check out the Lea iRoom II Daybed from Kids Furniture. I love the design, but it might work best in a child's or teen's room.

This is the Astoria Steel Daybed I found on Overstock.com. It has a great contemporary feel with a champagne finish. It looks super sturdy and modern!

For a more traditional look, I found a couple of very pretty ones at Daybeds.com. This is the Casey Daybed. It has a rubbed black finish, with beadboard panels and round finials. I think it has a French feel, especially with the wonderful bedding shown with it!

This one is the Surrey Daybed. The sleigh bed design is classic, with a warm wood finish. It would work beautifully with traditional furnishings and bedding!

Here is a really simple design from IKEA. It is the Hemnes Daybed. I love the storage underneath. It's a bit plain, but with the right bedding, this could be a nice, neutral backdrop for some bright pillows and accessories. I like to change things up a lot, so a neutral white starting point can be a good thingThe Powell Kawayan Bamboo Daybed from YWD.com is a fun change of pace! It is a simulated bamboo, constructed of steel. It has a tropical flair and the chocolate brown is so warm and inviting!

If price was no object, this John Kelly J1 Daybed from Name Brand Beds would be wonderful to own. It is simple, yet beautiful!

Another favorite from Name Brand Beds is the Miami Daybed. I love the textured bronze design and it definitely has and old Florida feel, one of my favorite styles!

Pottery Barn has some great choices in daybeds like this Seagrass one, made from renewable fiber. With bright, crisp linens and pillows, this organic daybed would look great in a sunroom, too!

The Claudia Daybed has that wonderful old, antique iron bed look. I love the crystal knob finials and Edwardian style! Sweet and comforting, like Grandma's house.

This last one from Pottery Barn is the Caden Daybed. I like the combination of wood and woven jute. It feels casual and comfortable. The jute gives it really nice textural appeal!

Seeing Red in The Kitchen!

Over the years and in various homes, no matter what color my kitchens have been, I have always loved having a few pops of red in the decor. Red adds warmth and liveliness to the room!

My favorite little touches are those old red utensils from the fifties, like this beautiful pastry blender.

I love this red colander and the crock for keeping things semi-organized.

I found this gorgeous set of red utensils at http://www.salvo.co.uk/ . Anything I could cook with these would surely taste just like grandma used to make!

And I'd love to have this brand spanking new little beauty (from Williams-Sonoma) to add to my red collection! Fabulous function mixed with retro beauty all wrapped up in my favorite kitchen color. Who could ask for more?

A Communion With Old Friends!

I've been a little neglectful of my blog lately. Summer days go by so fast and I am spending a lot of time on outdoor projects.

I've also been busy preparing to attend a weekend get-together for some old school friends. A couple of my classmates planned a wonderful two-day event in Memphis for all of our graduating class who could attend. I went to a small Catholic school and pretty much grew up with this group of about 50 friends, so it was so much fun to be together again, like one big family!

Have you ever seen a more ragtag bunch of angels?

I had so much fun catching up on the lives and times of these old friends. It was as if no time had passed since I had last seen them. But, after all, does anyone know you better than the girl who stands next to you in a scratchy dress and too-tight Mary Jane shoes, with a veil covering pin-curled hair that just won't stay curled no matter how much AquaNet your mother sprays on it? I think not.

P.S. Take a guess which one is me!

A Pretty Place to Call Home!

I have been shopping around for some things for my daughter, who will soon be moving into her first apartment. We have somewhat different tastes in decor, but I am starting to really like some of the styles she favors. She likes ornate details and fairly neutral, understated colors. A little French style, a little shabby chic, and just a touch of Hollywood opulence all seem to be a part of her favorite "look". I think some of these accessories and furnishings would work nicely with the things we have found for her so far!

These suitcases are from Chloes Chic Boutique. Both pretty and functional, they could be used for storage of extra bed linens or out of season clothing!

This mirror has nice detail and is a great size! I found it at Paris Couture Antiques. It looks so pretty with the sconces, hung over this fireplace, but it would work in a bedroom or dining area as well.

No French decor is complete without a depiction of the Eiffel Tower! This poster print from All Posters adds a little romance and a pop of color to an old favorite image.

I love the buttery yellow of this faux bamboo chest from Paris Hotel Boutique! The tall, slim shape makes it perfect for a bedroom with limited floor space. And, the multiple drawers will hold all of a lady's essentials!

And for the "piece de resistance", a lovely crystal chandelier from Home of Decor will add the right touch of elegance and opulence to a dining space!

A first apartment will almost certainly not contain all of one's dream decor right off the bat, but we are searching the antique markets and resale shops for some look-alike styles that will make her new home all her own!

Patio Style!

I have been looking for interesting planters to use on my patio. I have already purchased some colorful annuals and I've been keeping them alive in their tiny pots, but they are ready to spread their roots in some bigger homes! Here are some great ones I found.

These colorful self-watering pail planters are available at Gardeners. I have a small fence where I think they would work perfectly!

If you're looking for something more contemporary, this square, steel planter with stud details fits the bill! You can find it at SimplyPlanters.

Target has these lovely blue planters. I love the colors and I think they look cool, peaceful and beachy!

This Smith and Hawken planter is also from Target. The steel and iron filigree has a burnished copper finish for great style indoors or out.

With my penchant for color, I adore these Talavera pots from Plowhearth! The colors are so brilliant, they really don't need flowers and will probably look best with just green plants in them as shown.

A Mix for Everything?

I've been interested in trying out making mixes to keep on hand for things we cook regularly. I researched some recipes and decided to give it a try this past weekend.

I made Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookie mix, enough for 4 or 5 big batches. I made Brownie mix, also enough for 5 batches of brownies. When we are ready to bake these, we will just need to add eggs and butter.

I also made a mixture that is meant to replace cream soup mixes in recipes. It has powdered milk and cornstarch as well as several herbs, dried onions and bouillion in it. I think this will be very convenient to have on hand. I made a potato soup mix that can be prepared one bowl at a time. Should be great for lunches!

And finally, I made a Toffee Coffee mixture that really is very tasty! I sat down with a hot cup after all my hard work!

Could You Live Aboard?

I have a strange fascination with the idea of living on board a boat. I say "the idea" because I also have a sneaking suspicion that the idea is a lot more fun and interesting than the reality could ever possibly be!

I think about how much I would need to pare down my belongings to be able to live on a boat. On some level, that appeals to me, along the lines of the "simplify your life" advice that I keep hearing.

Can you picture yourself preparing a meal in this little floating kitchen?

Or heading off to bed down this "hallway" to a tiny bunkroom?

This seems to be a more deluxe version of the "live-aboard" bedroom. Not too shabby!

How about entertaining in this family room? There's a sturdy place for the wine and hors d'oeuvres! What else do you need?

And who wouldn't love to wake up to this view every morning?

Maybe someday I will get the chance to try the live-aboard lifestyle! Thinking about it makes me look around and contemplate what I would keep if I were planning such a move in the near future. If nothing else, this exercise might be a great way to kick start my spring de-cluttering!

He Loves Color!

I have never met a child that did not love to draw, color, paint and make things!

Children seem to have endless creative energy that can be seen in the games they play, the songs they sing and the stories they tell. I love to watch the face of a child as he creates his own version of a masterpiece! We may not even be able to identify the subject, but you can tell by the way his face shines when he looks at it, that he sees the perfect image in his mind's eye and he is pleased with his accomplishment!

Parents and caregivers can help to nurture and encourage this natural creativity and keep the artistic spark alive in every child!

Faith and The Artist!

I've been reading "Walking on Water; Reflections on Art and Faith" by Madeleine L'Engle. It is described as a collection of the author's meditations on the nature of art and its relation to faith.

L'Engle feels that talking about her art and talking about her Christian faith are one and the same.

"It means attempting to share the meaning of my life, what gives it, for me, its tragedy and its glory. It is what makes me respond to the death of an apple tree, the birth of a puppy, northern lights shaking the sky, by writing stories."

This is a remarkable and thought-provoking book that is best read a little at a time and reflected upon before moving on. It is an inspirational look at the creative process and how the artist's spiritual self shines through his or her creations!

This is a book I will be reading again!

Centerpiece Ideas for a DIY Wedding!

There seem to be so many weddings taking place around me this season! In looking around for some inexpensive alternatives for table centerpieces for the reception venues, I have seen some really lovely and simple displays that could be DIY projects.

This is so cute for a beach themed wedding! I think I would go for a larger fishbowl for greater effect, but the idea is a good one!

Floating candles among rose petals makes an easy but pretty, glowing centerpiece!

While I'm not usually a fan of submerging flowers and calling it a day, these blooms are so vibrant and colorful in this vase! I could see these at a morning or afternoon reception.

There's not much that's prettier than fully bloomed roses. These are cut short and placed in water with clear glass pebbles. Surrounded by the square votives, they make a dramatic focal point!

It's well known that color affects our moods. It can have a strong influence on how we feel, both mentally and physically. Red is an energetic color! It increases the heart rate and raises blood pressure. While it may not be a great choice for wall color, red accessories can add a pop of interesting color to a room! It creates a strong first impression, so don't shy away from red!

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

It's not actually Mexican Independence Day, but a holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Americans have taken to celebrating this holiday, enjoying traditional Mexican foods and participating in parades and other activities on the Fifth of May!

I love Mexican food and this is just a great excuse to plan a fiesta, complete with chicken enchiladas, tacos, stuffed jalapenos, salsa, chips and guacamole! I like to use chipotle peppers in mole sauce in place of taco sauce. The spicier it is, the more I love it. But, to keep from going overboard with the heat, here is the Scoville Heat Chart, which shows the heat factor of various peppers. My family will thank me for not scorching their taste buds!

Fire Up The Grill for A Healthy Meal!

I'm not a vegetarian. But, I'm not a big fan of meat either. I can go long stretches without eating meat and never really miss it. My family, on the other hand, all pretty much expect to see some kind of meat on the menu for dinner every night. Although we do occasionally have a veggies-only dinner, firing up the grill always means it's time to cook meat, chicken or fish. I'm afraid there will be a mutiny if the smell of hickory smoke and charcoal fill the air and no meat appears on their plates when it is time to sit down!
But, look at all these beautiful choices for grilling this summer! It is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate!

The brilliant colors make it clear that there is a huge range of nutrients to be had in these grilled selections!

A little smokiness in tomatoes and asparagus just make them that much more flavorful!

Mushrooms such as portobellos can taste very similar to meat when cooked over hot coals with a little oil or marinade brushed on. Multi-colored peppers remain sweet and a little crisp when lightly grilled!

And now for dessert! These would certainly melt in your mouth for a healthy sweet treat!

I am going to try out an all-veggie and fruit grill night this summer and see what my family thinks. Maybe they will surprise me and love it! But, maybe I will have some burgers waiting in the wings just in case.

A New/Old Table for My Living Room?

I need a new coffee table and I recently came across some with "aged" copper on the tops. They are kind of rustic, but beautiful! I have become pretty much obsessed with owning one, but they are quite pricey.

As it happens, my sister-in-law is a copper artist whose beautiful work can be seen here: Copperworx
I am thinking of pulling some family strings to get a top made for an existing table that I have. The style of the table is similar to the top photo, but a little smaller and rectangular. If it works out, I will post photos soon!

A Party and Spicy Leftovers!

It's that time of year! And a friend's 50th birthday was the perfect excuse for a Spring Crawfish Boil! We went to his lakehouse and enjoyed crawfish with the traditional accompaniments, corn, red potatoes, andouille sausage, onions and garlic, all cooked up with plenty of Cajun spice!
It can be difficult to estimate the amount of whole crawfish needed for a crowd, and since Southerners NEVER want to run out of food, there is usually a good bit left over to be sent home with friends.
Here's a great recipe for using up those leftover crawfish tails.

Crawfish Etouffee

1/4 cup butter
3 Tblsp all-purpose flour
1 cup onions, chopped
1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup celery, chopped
1/4 cup scallions, chopped
1 tsp chopped garlic
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp black pepper

Melt butter in heavy skillet. Add flour and cook, stirring until it starts to brown. Add chopped onion, bell pepper, celery and garlic and cook until vegetables are almost tender. Add crawfish tails, salt, cayenne pepper and black pepper. Cover and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. You can add a little water or chicken broth if mixture thickens too much. Add chopped scallions and cook about 5 more minutes.
Serve over hot cooked rice.

I made my first sale on 1000Markets today! It turned out to be a buyer from right here in my local area although not someone I know.
1000Markets is a beautiful, handmade site that is quite new, but I am really looking forward to watching it grow and develop. I think it is going to take off soon! As a seller there, you can apply for membership to various markets within the site that are geared toward your types of products and buyers. This makes for small “communities” of sellers within the larger overall community. I think it is a brilliant concept for creating a supportive network of handmade artisans and crafters!

One of the markets I belong to is called “The Village” It is based on the idea of an actual village with shops, homes, etc. There is even a map of this virtual village that shows a lake and a shopping promenade!

It's such a fun concept and the community on the site is very positive and supportive! The site owners are accessible and professional. I love being in on the ground floor of a brand new handmade shopping site! 1000Markets is affiliated with Amazon and transactions are processed through Amazon Payments.

Stay tuned for future developments at 1000Markets. I think we will see great things happening there!

Spring Cleaning: Get Organized!

Every Spring, I fall into the "getting organized" mindset. I realize if Icould keep it going all year, it wouldn't be such a chore to start up again each year when Spring arrives. May be if I just had the right organizational tools, I could keep it all together.

With that in mind, I have been looking around for some things to help me store my stuff!

I love these drawers from The Container Store. They look neat and airy, as if they are suspended in space. They are made for the laundry room, but, I think they would also work well if you have a little extra wall space in a closet!

These sweater bins are from Kangaroom Storage. I love how they are designed so that each item can be seen. They are attractive and compact for maximizing storage space.

I can see this unit of basket drawers in a bathroom, or bedroom where a little extra countertop space would be helpful, along with the storage provided by the baskets! They are from Target.

Angels All Around!

I am back from my beach trip and we had a fabulous time with beautiful, sunny days! We ate some great seafood, drank sangria in the afternoon and enjoyed the sun and the company of good friends!

But, we had a very frightening experience on the way home. We were within a couple of hours of our hometown when suddenly the car in the next lane, obviously completely unaware of us, suddenly changed lanes, coming right over on top of us! I was driving my SUV with two of my friends as passengers. I had my cruise set to about 75 mph. When I hit the brakes and swerved to avoid a collision with the other vehicle, we started fishtailing all over the highway and onto the shoulder! I struggled to regain control, just missing a steel highway sign, and also avoiding the steep dropoff on the right shoulder which, had we gone down it, would certainly have resulted in the vehicle flipping. We finally ended up in a complete tailspin and came to a stop facing oncoming traffic! Amazingly, no one hit us and after the moment it took me to regain my wits, I moved the car into a turnaround in the median!

I can't express how shook up the three of us were! We then discovered that the extensive skidding had caused a flat tire.

So, here we were, three middle-aged, slightly sunburned and badly shaken ladies, in the middle of a four-lane state highway with a flat tire! Then the most lovely sight appeared like a mirage in the desert. A camo truck carrying four Army National Guard men and women came down the highway and right to a stop where we were. They were apparently on their way back to Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, MS. They got out, and after inquiring as to why we appeared to be facing in the wrong direction on the side of the highway, they made quick work of changing the tire! We could barely express our gratitude and relief!

What a weekend! I had a great trip, of course, but more importantly, I was visited by angels, in the air and on the ground! I'm glad to be safe at home!

Rest and Relaxation!

Well, the day has finally arrived! I am leaving at noon for my annual girlfriend trip to the beach. I am hoping for lots of sunshine. The weather report is promising mostly beautiful, sunny days in the 70's and slightly cool nights.

I will try to remember to take some photos and post a recap when I come back after the weekend. I won't tell all, of course. We do have our motto: "What happens at the beach stays at the beach!" Nothing ever really happens, but it's still fun to have a motto!

Other than mixing mimosas in the morning and margaritas in the afternoon, we will be perfectly well-behaved ladies, as always.

<-----------But, if we happen to run into this guy.... all bets are off!

The Pantone Color Report for Spring 2009 shows us a great collection of colors that will be popular this spring! I love the Palace Blue, Super Lemon and the Lucite Green!

All of these colors have a subdued, sophisticated feel, without being dull or drab!

It's Your Life; Do You Rent or Own?

I've learned that there are businesses that rent out accessories, and even more amazing, people who rent them! Designer handbags from Prada, Louis Vuitton or Gucci can be rented by the week. Are you kidding me?

I assume the renters are people who can't actually afford to purchase said bags.

I understand the allure of the NAME! When my daughters were in their early teens, it became apparent that certain clothing brands were essential to their well-being! Never mind that the items looked exactly like other less expensive versions. The extra cost was for the tiny sewn in tag with the NAME on it, even if the tag wasn't visible when wearing the clothing! Thank goodness, as they are maturing, they are getting some sense again and choosing their wardrobe based on what they love, color, style and fit, rather than the name.

I don't think I could stand myself if I became so enamored of a designer brand that I would pay to carry a handbag for a week! To each his own, of course, but it seems a little desperate to me.

I can't help but think there is a self-esteem issue in here somewhere.

I make bags, so maybe I'm biased. Also, I don't think I'm a good enough actress to walk around with a $10,000 handbag, pretending it is mine. I'd probably carry it in a big ziploc bag to keep from messing it up!

Say No to Cake!

Just Say NO!

I have been getting ready for my annual spring trip to the beach with my five best girlfriends! We have been taking this trip together for the past 12 years and I look forward to it all year long. Unfortunately, I don’t really start getting serious about my diet and workout program until just a few weeks prior to departure.

It’s always the same, living large (no pun intended) all winter and then frantic dieting and exercise from mid-February through the end of March when I know I will have to put a swimsuit on again.
I have had chicken and vegetables, fish and vegetables, and shrimp and vegetables every night for weeks, with a couple of salads thrown in here and there. I miss chocolate cake with all of my heart!

But, I am determined to stick it out and be ready to go, all for the joy of having four carefree days and nights with my gal pals, sunning, sleeping late and sipping wine and, oh yes, there will be cake!

More Blessed Than I Ever Thought Possible!

That is how I am feeling right now! I had been waiting for about a week for the results from a biopsy. I was pretty worried about it. It had taken several weeks to get in to have it done because of scheduling conflicts the doctor had, so the anxiety had plenty of time to build. The nurse called first thing yesterday morning with great news. No malignancies found!

Happy Day!

Well, that alone would make anyone feel blessed. But, what I have not been able to stop pondering for the past 24 hours is how long it took me to respond to all the family and friends who were waiting for the answer along with me. By phone calls, emails and text messages, I shared my good news with all these wonderful people who had hoped and prayed for a good result for me. Many had apparently marked the day on their calendars, or maybe have a better memory than I do. My daughter even had phone calls from her friends before 8 AM asking if I'd heard anything!

I am thankful for my health. But, I am amazingly grateful for the reminder this has given me that I have people who really care about me! I can't think of a greater blessing in life than that!

Morning Glory!

I am not a morning person. I love to sleep in. But, every now and then, I wake up extra early for no apparent reason and it makes me wish I could always wake up with the sunrise. That is definitely the most peaceful and reflective part of the day. When everyone else in the house is still sleeping and you have the whole day before you, there is so much to look forward to and so much to be thankful for.
I am resolved to try to get into the early morning habit. I need that time to myself. It helps me start my day with an entirely different attitude!
A lady I worked with for many years used to say "Morning Glory!" with a bright smile every day when I would arrive to work. I really want to start enjoying the glory of the morning!

Striking a Balance Between Uptown and Downhome!

Operating an internet business has been an eye opener for me in lots of ways. I have "met" so many great people through my handmade business and they are from all over the world! I am trying to learn how to be myself when communicating in all of these online venues while still maintaining a professional demeanor.

Two things come into play here. I'm from the South, which brings its own issues in communication since we have a lot of "sayin's" down here that would probably be meaningless to non-Southerners. Also, I have a bit of a dry wit that doesn't necessarily translate well in the typed word, since there is no wry tone or sly grin to go along with the words.

I think people who love handmade things also like to see a little of the artisan behind the product, so I try to be as authentic as I can be, but without letting the "folksy" take over.

I once received a convo from someone on Etsy that said, "I live in Jackson, too" and proceeded to ask a question about an item. Since I was (over)excited to have someone locally that had found me on Etsy, I responded with something like "Howdy, neighbor!", which, of course, I would never actually say to someone in person, unless I woke up one day to find that the Clampetts had moved in next door. Needless to say, that buyer "took to the hills" (one of those Southern "sayin's") and was never heard from again!

I guess the lesson is to be yourself, but be your best, most polished-up self when dealing with your buyers and others online. You are the face of your business, so put your best one forward!

For My Crafting Buddies: Remembering How We Got Here!

If, like me, you are a crafter trying to run an internet business, you may have already thought about this. But, it just occurred to me that if I'm not careful, the business part of my business will soon take all the fun out of the creating part of it! I don't want that to happen.

When I first started selling my handmade items on Etsy, I went into it with an open heart and wide-eyed innocence about the whole handmade internet community. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is a wonderfully friendly and supportive place to be! I loved it then and now! My attitude was that I would make what I loved to make out of the textiles that I loved to work with. I would share them on my Etsy site and if someone found that they loved them too and I made a sale, wonderful! Well, great news! People did like them and people did buy them.

Fast forward a couple of months and I find myself spending inordinate amounts of time on the computer, reading all the advice I can find about building my business, all helpful and useful! Before I knew it, my fun adventure in crafting had become a race to the finish line! Making treasuries, getting put into treasuries, getting on the front page, getting a spot in the gift guides, checking heart counts, page views, google analytics results, and of course feedback! And don't forget the social networking. Had I twittered enough today? Checked facebook? Added photos to flickr? Every day, there is a new site to join, and sometimes I can't remember if I've already joined it!

Enough!

Time to step back and sew something! Isn't that what I started this for? Oh, yeah.... making things.... that was what I wanted to do!

So, I will be spending more time sewing and less time socializing/marketing and I'll see how that works. You may not see me around as much where the cool crafters hang out. But, I'll be checking in occasionally. And, hopefully, I'll have some new stuff to show off!

Stealing Time For Fun!

With spring around the corner, I am starting to think about all the things I love to do when the warm, sunny days arrive and daylight lingers until late into the evening. My time is so limited right now with my day job and my handmade business that I wonder how I will fit in the fun! I know I need to organize my time better if I want to be able to enjoy my favorite spring activities like gardening, taking long walks and soaking up sunshine! So, I’ve decided to take a hard look at my schedule and take control of some of the lost minutes and hours. Here are some steps I am going to take.

Home Activities

Get everyone involved in keeping the house tidy.
Keep meals simple and let each family member take a night to be responsible for preparing the meal.
Make a weekly menu and grocery list to cut down on last minute trips to the store.

Crafting

Spend some time each evening looking at the next day’s schedule. Combine errands such as mailing orders, grocery shopping and returning library books, then schedule a time to complete them.
Plan several blocks of time throughout the day to sew, depending on what needs to be completed. I will save at least one of those for working on new ideas and designs, which keeps my creativity
Set aside time for writing Thank You notes and packaging orders.

Marketing

Make a list of the marketing activities I currently spend time on, including social networking, such as Twitter, Facebook, Etsy Forums, etc.
Assign a number from 1 to 10 in importance and effectiveness to each activity.
Based on the number given, assign a certain amount of time each day that will be the maximum time dedicated to that activity.
Make a daily schedule to include these activities, but stay flexible and know which ones to leave off if something unexpected arises and time runs short.

When it's all done and the sun is still shining, I’ll kick back and enjoy a cold drink and relaxing with friends and family! That’s what spring is for!

Dressing Mom; I Guess I'm Hip Again!

Before marriage and kids, I loved fashion as much as the next girl. I wouldn’t say I was a trendsetter, but I tried not to fall too far behind those who were. Then came marriage and shortly after that, three wonderful offspring! Life was busy and exhausting and many a time, I left home knowing full well that I was a fashion “don’t”!

Then my girls hit the pre-teen years and almost everything in my closet became an embarrassment to them. My multicolored, striped, crochet-look cardigan, my “Merry Christmas Ya’ll” holiday sweatshirt, and of course, the dreaded “mom jeans”! My wardrobe was to be pitied and tolerated until I could be made cool again, with their expert help.

Over the next few years, before leaving home, as ridiculous as it felt, I consulted people I had given birth to in regards to whether I was wearing something socially acceptable. I slowly but surely regained some fashion sense, and amazingly, started having to say to my fashion-conscious daughters, “ No, you can’t have the purse (or sweater or whatever) that I just bought, but you can borrow it.”

So, I’ve come full circle and I’m hip again! I have a little grandson now, which is really convenient, since I also still have that comfy multicolored cardigan sweater. Use It Up Sewing!

I hate to waste anything, especially my fabrics. I have been saving the scraps from my pillows and bags for a long time, especially if they are of a size that might be useful.

I decided to use some of them to make a throw for my family room, mostly to use as a cover for an ottoman that has seen better days. I think it is turning out great! I love the color combination and the sophisticated damask patterns all sewn up in a funky patchwork design!

And I love using up all those lovely bits of fabric that have been sitting in my scrap basket!

Last summer, I made my first effort at container gardening. It was a lot of fun and I was really surprised by the yield we received from just a few large pots, planted with tomatoes, bell peppers and herbs.I can't wait to get started again on this year's "garden in pots"! There are a few things I learned last year, and I will be more prepared. If you want to try container gardening, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Get a soil mixture that will stay fairly loose. I like the ones that have the little water absorbing granules that release the moisture between waterings.

If your pots will be sitting on a concrete or brick patio, raise them a few inches off the hot surface to keep them cooler in summer temperatures.

Don't underestimate the eventual growth and yield of tomatoes. Put tall, strong stakes into the pots early so you can tie up the stalks as soon as they start producing their heavy fruit

Be prepared for pests before they arrive. A metal pie pan tied with string, allowed to blow in the breeze will frighten birds and other critters that would eat your lovely produce. Be on the lookout for the hideous creature shown in the photo below, the tomato hornworm. I had many visits by these yucky critters last summer and they look so much like the foliage of a tomato plant, they are hard to spot. They will eat up the plant, leaves and all, within just a day or two. You can handpick them off (eww, my hubby did it!), but use gloves, they will try to BITE! There are also insecticides to use for them, but I try not to use chemicals on my garden.

I Got Tagged - Now What?

Apparently I got tagged by Meekiyua! It's my first time to get tagged, so I had to figure out what it's all about.

The rules are to tell seven things about yourself and then tag seven others. Here goes:

1. I am a "word nerd" and I used to win spelling bees all the time in school. Now, that I have admitted this, I will be doubly embarrassed to find I have misspelled something here on my blog! (Please let me know if you see something.)

2. I am addicted to Top Chef, as well as some other cooking shows. I watch the Top Chef episodes, sometimes five or six times. I read the judges' blogs and search the net for other blogs about the show. I'm a little obsessed. But, I never try to cook any of the dishes, too complicated.

3. I was bitten by a copperhead snake on the ankle about eight years ago. It was on my driveway. One night in the hospital and a week on crutches. No one sucked the venom out either. Apparently, that is just done in old western movies.

4. I am half Italian and learned to make homemade pasta and tortellini from my grandmother, but I don't like pizza.

5. I have three kids from 19 - 23 years old and a four-year-old grandson.

6. I would like to learn French.

7. My best vacation ever was to Maui!

Where Did These Come From?

I sew. Ask anyone! Look at my Etsy shops. That's what I do. I make things out of fabric. So, what is that big pile of baby soft crocheted granny squares doing in my craft room? Well, just as most people have comfort foods they reach for in stressful times, I have my comfort crafts and crocheting is one of them. Sometimes, I just want to do something with my hands without really thinking about it. That's when I reach for my crochet hook and soft baby yarn and just start making small granny squares.

I am not discounting the creativity that goes into the beautiful and intricate items that many crochet artisans produce. I have crocheted items that require a lot of concentration and thought. But, my little granny squares don't take a lot of brain power for me and the baby soft yarn is comforting and sweet to work with after a long day.

Over the past year, I have picked it up again several times and now I have quite a collection of squares in pastel colors. I plan to start piecing them together soon and donate them somewhere, where they can be of use, and provide comfort for some little one that may need it.

Packing Light Makes for a Carefree Trip!

I have a strange fascination with packing. I love getting ready for a trip. I sometimes pack a week in advance even for a short getaway. I think the act of getting ready to go is part of the enjoyment and anticipation of the possible adventure that lies ahead.

I love to see how light I can pack. I want to be able to handle my own luggage wherever I go, if possible. To that end, I am always looking for ways to cut down on weight and bulk when packing for a trip. I keep sample sizes of toletries handy. Toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, hairspray, even contact solution can be found in travel sizes. Those little packets with nail polish remover wipes are great for packing. With products for which I have a brand preference, I simply fill a 1 ounce travel container from my larger container at home.

Pill organizers are great for taking either prescription meds, or just fill the sections with ibuprofen, tums or whatever over-the-counter medications you like to keep on hand. I keep small, plastic containers that can hold Q-tips, cotton balls, band-aids, etc. but a ziplock bag would work in a pinch. Those facial wipes that are dry, but suds up when you run them under water are lightweight and perfect for travel. I have several sectioned, zippered travel organizers to hold everything in place.

For clothing, I try to pack a basic wardrobe with interchangeable elements. Black and khaki colored basics are great and can be combined with a bright tank, colorful scarves and other accessories to add pop to your wardrobe! With black, it's so easy to dress up or dress down depending on the occasion. Rolling rather than folding clothes can sometimes make it easier to pack and also, reduce wrinkling. I take a small, empty spray bottle in case I need to spritz something that is wrinkled. One or two pairs of shoes will usually be sufficient if you take the right ones. If I'll be walking a lot, I take one pair for comfort and then one more for pretty!

Packing light is a bit of a hobby, some might say obsession, for me. But, it's fun and I know that I am preparing the way for an easy and carefree trip, where everthing I need is close at hand, but my luggage is not going to drag me down. Happy traveling!

A Little Work, A Little Play!

I've spent the weekend getting ready for a trip to the Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The company I work for hosts a meeting there every year at this time and it is always very enjoyable. The food is great and the accomodations are beautiful

I wish I enjoyed gambling more, but I really find it boring. I've tried hanging out in the casino to be sociable with the other meeting attendees, but the odor of smoke is overwhelming. I much prefer to wander around the shops within the Beau Rivage. They have some great gift shops and upscale clothing stores, along with several good restaurants and a yummy coffee shop! Between meetings, I like to grab a cup of coffee and a mini fruit tart or a brownie, then sit out on the veranda to soak up a little sushine and read a book. It doesn't exactly sound like a wild and crazy hard-partying casino visit, does it? But, just getting away and relaxing in a beautiful, sunny setting is just what I need to recharge my battery!

Here's to the Ladies Who Love and Laugh Near the Sea!

I go on a "girls only" trip to the beach every year in early spring and I am already looking forward to it! No, that's not us in the photo, but don't they look like they are having fun? I have been taking my trip with the same group of six ladies for about 12 years. Some of them are friends I see all the time and some are friends I really only see when we go to the beach! But, for those few days each year, they are all my sisters and confidants. I can say anything to these ladies and they will understand.

We have been through so many life changes together and I feel they know me and love me no matter what. I look forward to it all through the year, but right about now, at the beginning of February, when I am tired of the cold in my bones, I really start to long for carefree days in the sun with my gal pals, just soaking up sun, sharing the ups and downs of life, and trying to wait until at least 3 pm to start cocktail hour!

And to think, those ladies above were probably doing the same things about 50 years ago. Let's hear it for girlfriends!

A Door That Leads Somewhere!

I am determined to find a new way to photograph my products, especially my bags. I usually have one of my daughters model for me, but it is getting more and more difficult to work out a good time to take photos when they are available and there is good natural light. Winter weather and shorter days, along with their school schedules and part-time jobs, make for a tight window of opportunity for taking photos.

With this goal in mind, I have been looking around at various types of photographs, hoping for an epiphany. My current favorite background style involves the use of old weathered doors. I have always loved old doors. They seem to hold a secret, especially if they are time-worn and weathered. I think about what and who has passed through them over the years. For me, doors are symbolic of the future and opportunities and even adventure! Who knows what might be waiting on the other side?

Family Traits!

My sister is a wonderfully talented knitter. This sweater is her latest creation. I think it is beautiful! I knit a little now and then, mostly small projects, like scarves. I don't have the patience for projects that take days and weeks to complete, but I admire those who do.

I wonder if creativity is hereditary. My mother never did much as far a fiber arts, but I remember various projects involving decoupage. Also, there is a set of acrylic paint-by-numbers pictures that my parents did together when they were newly married. It is obvious which one my mom painted, so precise and inside the lines. My dad's looks like he finished it in about five minutes, which he probably did, so he could get back to watching football!

I hope I am passing on a love of creating to my own kids. So far, I have not seen a lot of interest on their part, in making something with their own hands. But, if creativity is in the blood, they will find theirs eventually!

A Colorful Place To Land

I have been painting my bedroom this past week. For the last few years, it has been a bright sort of beachy, coral color. I loved it when I painted it and for a couple of years after, but I have recently wanted a change to something more calm and earthy. I chose a color called spun sugar, which is a sandy-brown sugar color. I like the more neutral tone and I plan to add some color with bedding and pillows, but quiet, nurturing color that I can relax in.
I am always amazed at what a difference a can of paint can make. And, also at how much my mood and outlook is affected by color. I tend to be drawn to vibrant colors like reds, pinks and yellow. But, these colors are stimulating rather than calming. Bright red and yellow can increase blood pressure and muscle tension. Studies have shown that blues are more calming.
I think a combination of woodland colors, browns, greens and sky blue will make it a great place to begin and end the day. I will save the vibrant hues that I still love for the living areas of my home.

Starting All Over Again!

I apologize to my readers for all the confusion with the deleted blog. I was unable to retrieve my original blog, but the URL, or blog web address, became available again after the blog had been gone for a couple of weeks. So, I decided to reclaim it and here I am, starting over again.

I promise to be more careful from now on about deleting inactive email accounts and whatnot. But, after all, it's a learning process, especially for those of us who are technologically challenged!
